Job Description

REPORTS TO: Senior Pastor with accountability to Staff Parish Relations Committee

TYPE OF POSITION: Part time, 20 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Family Ministries will create a loving Christian education environment for children from infancy through 12th grade, their families, and other young adults.  The candidate will demonstrate an intimate relationship with God, and an understanding of United Methodist doctrine.  The Director of Family Ministry recruits, leads, equips, organizes, and supports lay persons who are called to use their gifts in ministry with children, youth, young adult and family ministries, and coordinates and nurtures the educational programs of children, youth, and their families.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Select and develop appropriate curricula for children, youth, and young adult programming.

Lead weekly programs for children and youth, such as Wednesday night and Sunday morning youth and children’s gatherings.

Plan appropriate activities and events for children, youth and families related to the mission and ministry of the church.

Work with staff and lay leadership in setting times for children, youth, and family ministry programming.

Recruit and equip volunteers who will be involved in ministry with children, youth, young adults, and families.

Ensure volunteers adhere to Safe Sanctuary policies.

Coordinate with the Reaching New People / Evangelism team to reach families, young adults, youth, and children in our community.

Work with children, youth, young adults and families to involve them in outreach/mission projects.

Use appropriate means of communication, including but not limited to social media, to create strong connections and to provide information to children, youth, young adults and families, and communicate with the congregation so that members are aware of the ministry and opportunities to be involved (including local church, District, and Conference events for children and youth.)  Also develop clear lines of communication with the church staff.

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Strong Christian faith and a genuine love for children and youth and a dynamic and enthusiastic attitude about being with children and youth is central.

Demonstrated understanding of United Methodist beliefs, and commitment to the spiritual heritage, doctrine, traditions, and social principles of the Church, exemplifying Christian character through a life of prayer, spiritual discipline, and leadership in the life of the Church.

Demonstrated excitement and commitment to the mission and vision of the Church including ability to build relationships and motivate others with new, creative, and effective ways to stimulate growth in youth activity attendance.

Undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college preferred.

Two years of work experience with children and youth is preferred.

Training and experience in Christian education and child and adolescent development preferred.

Familiarity with age appropriate social media and communication platforms.

Encourage outreach with youth by being involved in the community, always keeping an open mind demonstrating a willingness to learn.

Strong organizational and communication skills.  Friendly and outgoing personality with high energy level.

Proven ability to work with  and collaborate with people in a team setting is required.
